How long have you been diving?
I learned to dive in 1990 at Grand Cayman.
What type of diving activities do you enjoy?
Don and I enjoy diving on a coral reef in warm, clear tropical water. I also dive in Missouri. I enjoy diving in Cozumel and I like cave diving with Don and Jim Gustin in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
Where have you been diving?
I have been diving in California and the Channel Islands; Florida's springs, sinks, rivers, and caves; Minnesota; the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of Florida; the Keys; Hawaii; the Bahamas; Bonaire; the Turks and Caicos; the Cayman Islands; Cozumel; Cancun; the west coast of Mexico (Sea of Cortez); and in the Cenotes and caves in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. I have also been diving in several great locations in Missouri.
What was the most challenging skill for
you to complete during your open water training?
In my open water diver course we had to practice buddy breathing from a single regulator.
Why did you become a dive instructor?
I was a divemaster and assistant instructor for several years. I enjoyed working with students, particularly one-on-one. I enjoyed helping students who were having problems and I became an instructor because I wanted to do more to help people enjoy the underwater world.
What is the most rewarding part of your
job?
Helping a student who is having difficulty with a skill or who is uncomfortable in the water overcome these limitations and become a SCUBA diver.
How do you stay current with the changes
in diver education?
I attend instructor updates and I have pursued crossover certification with other agencies. I have also completed training in cave diving. I read several publications written for both dive professionals and for the recreational dive community.
What courses are you certified to teach?
I am certified to teach all SSI and PADI recreational diver courses and the PADI Divemaster course. I am also certified to teach the following Specialties:
Enriched Air Nitrox Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Deep Diver, Night Diver/Limited Visibility, Underwater Navigator, Project Aware, and Coral Reef Conservation.
Additional Information
I am interested in cave diving as well as recreational diving and I have full cave diver certifications from NACD, IANTD, and NSS-CDS.
