Gordon Poeschel - Owner and Instructor
How long have you been diving?
My family and I started diving in 1990.
What type of diving activities do you enjoy?
I think that wall diving is great fun. The feeling of being
suspended alongside a steep underwater wall is as close to flying
as one can get and not be in a plane. It also affords the opportunity
to see the large critters such as spotted eagle rays, turtles,
and sharks. At the other extreme I enjoy slowly touring the
reefs looking at all the tiny creatures that can be found.
Where have you been diving?
Bonaire, Guanaja, Roatan, Belize, Cozumel, Cancun, Grand Turk, Cayman Brac, Little Cayman, Grand Cayman, Andros Island, Bimini, the Virgin Islands, Curacao, Sea of Cortez, Palau, Akumal and the cenotes of Akumal, San Salvador, Conception, Galapagos, Saba, Lake of the Ozarks, and Table Rock Lake.
What was the most challenging skill for
you to complete during your open water training?
The most challenging was the controlled emergency ascent. The
trick was to get the proper control of my airway so as not to
run out of air before coming to the surface and at the same
time making sure I did not hold my breath on the way up.
Why did you become a dive instructor?
I enjoy teaching and talking to groups of people. By becoming
an instructor, I was able to combine my love for diving with
my interest in teaching motivated groups of people. I also wanted
to bring to Kansas City a program where we could teach the physically
challenged to dive.
What is the most rewarding part of your
job?
I love to see the light in the eyes of students as they successfully
move through the program. I love to see the excitement build
in people who initially are intimidated by the idea of diving,
then gradually learn how much fun they can have, and that they
can successfully challenge their fears and grow as an individual.
I also enjoy leading trips to great dive destinations and sharing
in the fun of new dive experiences for members of the group.
How do you stay current with the changes
in diver education?
I read the updates provided by PADI and SSI and enter all new
information in my Instructors Manuals. I also attend the PADI
and SSI continuing education programs on an annual basis.
What courses are you certified to teach?
With PADI and SSI, I am certified to teach Bubblemakers, Discover Scuba, Discover Scuba Diving, Scuba Review, Snorkeling, Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, Divemaster, DiveCon, Assistant Instructor, Emergency First Response, Search/Recovery, Boat Diver, Multilevel Diver, Under/Water Naturalist, Deep Diver, and Underwater Navigator, Nitrox, Underwater Photography and Wreck Diving.
